SEO Blog Malta - Target Your Audience with the Right Keywords

Target Your Audience with the Right Keywords

Posted on Sunday, 2nd November 2008

Knowing what your target audience wants and what they are searching for is a crucial part of Internet Marketing and to build a successful online business. In order to get targeted audience, your web pages should be optimised to attract your visitors and induce them to action.

The Right Keywords for Your Website

The first step in successful SEO and web copywriting is choosing the right keywords to fit your market needs. To get a grasp on what your audience is searching for, you can quickly survey your market for their keyword usage. In addition, use more detailed keyword research tools which can be found online.
Tips when conducting your keyword research:

  1. Use keyword phrases containing from two to four words
  2. Be specific – Geographically, by topic or product
  3. Use keywords that are important to your online business
  4. Avoid general keyword phrases or very competitive keywords

Use focused and targeted keywords that are common so that your results can be found easily, but selective enough that they don’t return millions of matches. Most searches are based on two to four keyword phrases, so phrasing is very important. For example, if you offer dog training as a service, you should target specific keywords such as “Malta dog trainer” and not general key phrases such as “dog training”. Very specific keywords will generate highly qualified, targeted traffic which will increase your potential sales.

The Wrong Keywords for Your Website

Avoid the single keywords, most popular or general keyword phrases since you will be competing with millions of other web pages for a search engine ranking.
Established companies who have been on the Internet for several years will have the advantage of aging, link popularity and a high PageRank, and therefore rank higher for broader or general keywords in search engines.

SEO – Feeding the Search Engines

Another critical factor to help drive targeted traffic to your website is optimising the site to make it not only user friendly, but also search engine friendly. Search engine friendly website use tags such as the title tag, and meta tags to help them determine what the site is all about and assist with the indexing process. Most tags are included in the <head> of a website.
Different search engines have different rules on how these tags are used and how many characters they should contain. I suggest you target and review your tags for the big three – Google, Yahoo and MSN, and you will be targeting almost 90% of potential customers searching online.

To make good use of your targeted keywords that you found during your research, include these keywords in the site copy and tags to maximise keyword density and improve your search engine rankings.
