Posted on Tuesday, 10th February 2009

Affiliate marketing is an online channel whereby owners of websites or publishers, known as affiliates, promote the goods and services of retailers or service providers known as merchants in return for commission. Most commissions are paid upon successful completion of a sale although some affiliate programmes will pay for leads. Although highly competitive, there are many examples of affiliates who have built seriously sized businesses as a result.

To become an affiliate you need to know about internet marketing and which products are worth promoting. Below is a list of useful terms and techniques that you might want to learn more about.

THE A – Z OF AFFILIATE MARKETING

A. is for Affiliate marketing.

C. is for Commissions. Earn them on sales or in some cases leads or even clicks.

I. is for Interaction. Get interactive by letting people leave comments on blogs. You can reply to these the same way and you`ll have an interactive site. Voila!

J. is for Joomla! Learn how to use it. You`ll be using software to build your website which is free and used by professional affiliates all over the world.

K.is for Karma. Be patient and ethical, don`t buy links or pay for unrealistic promises, you`ll only get scammed.

L. is for Link building. Trade links with other websites. Attract inbound links by offering something of value, whether you write some content for the other site, offer a discount and so on. Anything other than paying for links which is a no-no.

M. is for Multimedia. Add games, videos or music to your website. People will return to you, link to you and refer you to friends if they like your multimedia content.

N. is for Networking. Social networking, forums and blogs all play a part in getting you noticed. Spend an hour daily updating social network sites, posting on forums and blogging.

O. is for On-site content. It will need to be fun, informative and contain SEO keywords. Absolutely vital in getting decent search engine rankings and in attracting links.

P. is for PPC. Pay per click advertising increases traffic but it costs money and you can`t skimp and still get great results. The best keywords cost the most. The right keywords are vital in getting relevant traffic. You will need to keep refining your PPC campaign.

R. is for Research. Do it, loads of it. Find out what`s hot in your area and get promoting it.

S. is for SEO. Search Engine Optimisation is a combination of identifying the right keywords, optimising your site`s code correctly, creating unique, fresh content and attracting the right links.

U. is for Unique content (see on-site content above). Content is vital but it must be your own or you could be penalised.

W. is for Web Design and Wordpress. Design is a vital part of SEO - make sure your site is search engine AND user friendly. The former will get visitors to you, the latter will keep them there and make them spend. Wordpress is another shareware solution designed to easily create blogs and indeed entire sites and is used by many of today`s successful affiliates.

X. is for X-rated. Pornography is one of the most successful products out there and a vast percentage of daily internet searches are still for adult themes. In fact, many techniques have grown up in the intensely competitive world of adult advertising and have eventually become standard practice on the internet.

Y. is for Yardstick. You must constantly rate the performance of PPC campaigns, SEO keywords and other techniques in order to tweak and improve your campaigns.

Z. is for Zeal, because you`ll need plenty to keep your interest going on the long hard road to achieving solid, sustainable rankings in the search engines. But it is well worth it when you get there!

Choosing Successful Affiliate Programs

Ideally you want to promote something about which you are passionate. It is far easier to writer about it (remember that fresh content you need) and to enthuse about it on forums and the like if you have an active interest and some level of knowledge in it. Also look for programs which have plenty of widespread appeal. As an example, Weight Watchers is a name synonymous with dieting so no diet affiliate site would be complete without a link to their services, the same goes for other topics.

If you choose products and brands which people recognise they will be more likely to click on your links and sign-up or buy, thus driving commissions. Find and promote genuine deals which also give you a good commission but it is better to take multiple modest commissions from a reputable, established programme than to hanker after one huge commission cheque from a suspect merchant that has just entered the market with no track record.

Finally, take some time to Learn Affiliate Marketing techniques and focus on those that are most likely to give you serious long term traction in your sector. For bitterly competitive areas such as broadband or mobile phones, you will probably struggle to drive natural search rankings but could find a niche in social media. The choices and the opportunities are endless.
