Home Computer Hosting
Personal web hosting involves use of the home computer. The machine can be converted in to a private server by installing Window's Home Server software, which can be easily configured & is fairly easy to use. It isn't much to technical, and anyone with a little bit of learning can be able to use the server in best way possible.
Installing a Web Server in Windows
Windows OS is one of the most widely used operating system around the world. For this reason it is also one of the best options that are used to install a web server. IIS i.e Internet Information Service is a popular product that can be used with Window's. This windows service is incompatible with Window's 7 home edition, as this version of Window's 7 doesn't support networking. All the other version of Windows 7 are compatible and can be used for installing this.
Making the Website Available
The web server should be tweaked in such a way that the server should allow incoming request on port 80. This port allows external access to the website, and is necessary when the website is online for others, as they can be able to view the site. Any server that hosts a website should have a static, never changing IP address, without which it is nearly impossible to locate the website on the internet.
With all the above steps in place, a person is able to host hi or her website on their own. The difficult part is creating a server, but after initially trial & errors it shouldn't be found much difficult. All in all if you have followed all the steps, you are ready to host a website on your own.

To add something to this, unless you're using the newer mini-computers which have power consumption below 125W, it's not really worth it to host your websites from home. It's cheaper, and better to host at a Web Hosting Company.
